Lifelong Learning and Service Excellence Drive School of Medicine Administrator

Senior Administrative Officer in the School of Medicine, Ms Khanyi Khuzwayo.

For Senior Administrative Officer in the School of Medicine, Ms Khanyi Khuzwayo, success is built through consistent effort, lifelong learning and a commitment to serving others.

Her career at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) reflects a passion for excellence, resilience and creating an environment where others can thrive.

Working at the heart of one of the University’s largest academic Schools, she oversees financial management, human resource processes, governance support, procurement and administrative compliance. She also supervises administrative staff and ensures that policies and procedures are implemented effectively to support the School’s day-to-day operations.

“My role sits at the intersection of people, strategy and service,” she said. “Every day presents an opportunity to solve problems, improve systems and support both academic and professional staff in achieving the University’s teaching, research and community engagement objectives.”

Although much of her work takes place behind the scenes, she believes strong administration is fundamental to the University’s success. By ensuring sound financial stewardship, effective governance and efficient operational processes, she helps create the conditions that enable academics to focus on teaching and research while students receive the support they need to succeed.

Khuzwayo says one of the proudest milestones in her career was completing a Master of Commerce in Management while working full-time in a leadership role and balancing family responsibilities. “The experience reinforced my belief in lifelong learning and strengthened my ability to think strategically. Perseverance, consistency and the support of my family and colleagues made this achievement possible.”

Her journey has also been shaped by challenges. Balancing career aspirations with family responsibilities required resilience and adaptability, while personal experiences strengthened her empathy and reinforced the importance of perseverance. “Rather than allowing challenges to define me, I have chosen to let them refine me,” she said.

As UKZN celebrates Women’s Month, she hopes her story inspires young women to believe in themselves and embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. “Invest in your education, remain curious and never stop learning because knowledge opens doors that no one can take away from you. Do not be afraid to start small. Success is built through consistency, integrity and a willingness to learn from both achievements and setbacks.”

For Khuzwayo, Women’s Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while recognising the responsibility to create pathways for future generations. “It is a time to honour the women who paved the way before us and to create opportunities for those who will come after us. Leadership is not only about achieving personal success, but also about lifting others and creating spaces where women can thrive.”

Committed to continuous growth, she is currently pursuing doctoral studies focusing on sustainable income generation in Higher Education. She hopes her research will contribute to strengthening the long-term sustainability of South African universities while continuing to mentor others and drive organisational excellence.

Above all, she hopes her journey reminds the UKZN community that meaningful impact is achieved through dedication, resilience and service. “Success is rarely about one defining moment, it is built through consistent effort, resilience and a commitment to making a positive difference every day,” she said.
