Nursing Students Attend Nutrition Workshop
The Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) conducted an informative nutrition workshop for second-year Nursing students at UKZN.
HEALA is known for its campaigns that advocate for affordable and nutritious food for all in South Africa, as well as advancing food justice. Its current campaign focuses on front-of-package labelling.
During the workshop, HEALA facilitators explained this campaign and engaged the students in activities such as creating and acting out modified versions of well-known food advertising slogans.
The main objective of the workshop was to educate future professional nurses on the fundamentals of nutrition, healthy eating habits, and understanding food labels within a healthcare setting. The students also learned about the recommended daily food allowance and gained an understanding of the distinction between unprocessed, processed, and ultra-processed foods – all crucial aspects of health education.
Second-year student Ms Cailiosa Rose Riley expressed her enthusiasm for the workshop, stating that it was one of the best she had participated in. She praised the quality content and the facilitators’ evident passion, which made learning and engaging with the course material both interesting and enjoyable.
Riley added that the workshop challenged students’ preconceived notions about nutrition and emphasised the importance of returning to basic principles, which will equip them to better serve healthcare users in the future.
