UKZN Professor Publishes Guide to Crafting Academic Non-Fiction

Book cover: Academic Non-Fiction: Crafting to Publishing.

Professor Radhamany Sooryamoorthy from UKZN’s Department of Sociology has published a new book titled Academic Non-Fiction: Crafting to Publishing.

The book encourages readers to overcome the challenge of creating captivating nonfiction that is rich in facts, data, and information while appealing to a broader audience. Sooryamoorthy challenges the notion that nonfiction must be dull or exclusive.

By breaking free from the stereotype of dry and inaccessible academic writing, the book presents strategies to help individuals bring their nonfiction projects to life.

‘The book is aimed at both aspiring and seasoned writers. It reveals techniques that are often overlooked, and emphasises that academic nonfiction can be engaging and accessible,’ said Sooryamoorthy.

‘Covering essential topics such as idea generation, time management, writing techniques, and the use of technology – including AI – as well as proposal writing and peer review, it caters to a wide audience. This includes general readers, students, educators, practitioners, policymakers, and academic leaders.’

Comprising 24 concise chapters, the book serves as a practical toolkit for anyone interested in fact-based nonfiction writing.
